Denver Business Journal’s Spotlight on Battle of the Business Schools

DbjCOLLEGE BOWL: We repeat ourselves — to facilitate students’ learning, there’s nothing better than hands-on application of what’s taught in the classroom.

A team from Colorado State University’s School of Business topped one from the University of Colorado Boulder’s Leeds School of Business in a daylong business strategy competition, sponsored by RAS & Associates and DCP Midstream. A panel of nine judges from the companies chose the winner.

The scenario: An executive vice president had to decide whether or not to increase capacity, in order to move natural gas liquids from one location to another in northeastern Colorado. The students had to study three options and choose one.

“We wanted students to act as consultants, and tell the company not what it wanted to hear, but what they thought was the best thing for the company to do,” says Rob Swanson, CEO of RAS & Associates, which has been running such contests annually.
